Luke is enjoying a bit of locomotion these days.  On his tummy, he can turn 360 from side to side, and he can also go backwards. That's it.  No forward motion yet for this little guy.  So while he moves all about the room, he can't ever quite make it to his goal.  It's pretty funny because we find him backing into all sorts of things and getting stuck in the weirdest places.

How did I get under here?

I think I'm stuck.

Look at me, Mom!

No wait, I can't get out!

Nice to meet you, Auntie Jill!

My dear friend Jill lives in Kansas City, and she finally got to meet Luke on her trip to Grand Rapids last weekend.  The two of them had a great time getting to know each other.  Here are some great pics from our visit to Robinette's Apple Haus. I'd like to say that we drove all the way out there in order to look at the apples and enjoy the fresh air, but probably our main motivation was just to eat really good donuts.

Being an outstanding photographer, Jill immediately spotted the pumpkin crates as an ideal photo op.  During the shoot, a number of people were looking over at us, eying us disapprovingly (we thought).  But as we walked away we saw 2-3 more families get in line to take pictures by the pumpkins!

For those of you that don't live in Grand Rapids, I've heard many of you longingly proclaim, "gee, I wish I could have been there to see ArtPrize this year!"  Well yeah, okay, it was pretty awesome.  The 2nd annual ArtPrize competition was all over Grand Rapids, and lasted only two weeks, so we had to put off many of our fall weekend chores (oh darn) to go out and see the art.  Our family enjoyed a Saturday morning stroll around downtown GR to see what we could see. Thankfully, strollers were welcome.

Look at all the people, Mommy!

Here's the three of us in front of the Children's Museum and "Elephant Walk" (tenth place).

The Screech II - Musical Prodigy

The Screech, as annoying as it was, only lasted one week.  We were grateful to see it go.  However, during it's short stay we were able to capture this delightful little clip.  Pardon the crying at the end, it was bedtime.

Splash Splash Splash

Nothing seems quite as exciting to a baby as learning to use all your body parts. For Luke, the arms are especially fun for waving up and down in the air.  Usually a few times of this is enough to let off some energy or excitement, but occasionally, he gets extraordinary results - like at the piano, on the table, or in the bath.

There's nothing very exciting here to me, but apparently Luke thinks its a great time.

We love our little bathing babe!

Virgin Islands

In August we traveled to the US Virgin Islands with the Williamson family - what a fabulous vacation! Luke had a wonderful time.  He especially loved splashing the pool (which we visited multiple times a day) and being spoiled by everyone.

Out to dinner pics. This was Luke's first time in a restaurant high chair!

What a handsome group!

The Screech

In the last couple of weeks, Luke has been more fussy than normal.  We don't know if it's teething, growing pains, gas, or just his new personality.  But last weekend he developed something that is definitely new, and we are hoping that it's temporary.  We call it The Screech.  Just watch this video and you'll see what I mean.  We tell Luke that he sounds like a girl, but that hasn't seemed to stop him.  Did he pick it up from one of his girl cousins? Or maybe from one of his older baby friends? Who knows. It's kind of funny, and really, really, REALLY annoying.

Sam spends a lot of his free time on the computer at home, so Luke has had a lot of exposure to the computer already.  While he can't write any code (yet), Luke does enjoy playing a game of Baby Smash.  Developed by a fellow programmer dad, in Baby Smash, a symbol and a sound appear every time a key is pressed.  It's very rewarding for a little guy who likes to bang on the keys with both palms.

He's a computer prodigy in the making.

Cherry Capital Vacation

Sam, Luke and I spent last week vacationing at beautiful Spider Lake in Traverse City with some friends.  We took the Williamsons' boat with us, and spent many happy hours water skiing, tubing, and sun bathing.  We bought a life jacket for Luke so that he could come out for the fun.

This picture is terribly misleading.  Luke actually hated being in his life jacket, and fussed most of the time we were on the boat. Apparently he was willing to forget his troubles momentarily for the delight of having his picture taken.

We were thrilled that Rachel flew in from California to stay with us for the week.  We had a great time catching up in the evenings by the campfire, and she certainly got her baby fix, too.  She and I took Luke out to an island in the middle of the lake one day so that we could get some sun and let Luke play in the water.

Of course we had to visit the Cherry Republic in downtown Traverse City, where a pit full of cherry pits called us for a photo op.  Ian and Logan were too interested in playing with the pits to pay us much attention, but Luke was happy to be able to sit up on his own for once.

The three boys had lots of time to play together during our trip.  At this point in their development, the most they can really do is take toys from one another. Still, we did get them to sit nicely together for a few pictures. I love this picture: here's our walker, our crawler, and our sitter.

All in all, we had a fabulous time.  I'm still trying to get used to the fact that I have to wake up at 6 am every day now, even when we're on vacation.  But when this face greets me every morning it somehow makes it all worth while.

Luke's first ever DeJong annual cottage vacation on Lake Michigan was a huge hit. This little man is turning into quite the beach bum. Check out all of these pictures of Luke at the beach.
